The Story Behind Princess Anne’s Iconic Brooch Collection

Princess Anne is known for her exquisite collection of brooches, each with its own unique story and history. One particular piece that stands out is the Princess’ knotted brooch. This gold piece features a rope design and is adorned with delicate stones, adding a touch of elegance to any outfit.

The mastermind behind this intricate piece is Scottish jeweller Alf Grant, who has been crafting brooches since he began his jewellery-making apprenticeship in 1966. Alf was commissioned to design and create a brooch for Princess Anne’s 40th birthday and her visit to the Helensburgh yacht club for the opening of their new clubhouse in June 1990. The brooch was specifically designed with a nautical theme in mind to commemorate the occasion.

Alf Grant’s design for the Princess’ brooch featured a reef knot made from nine-carat yellow gold wire, symbolizing strength and unity. Additionally, Scottish freshwater pearls were incorporated to represent Princess Anne’s Scottish heritage, while rubies were added to mark her 40th birthday. These elements combined to create a unique and meaningful piece that captured the essence of the royal’s visit to the yacht club.

Upon receiving the brooch, Princess Anne was impressed by Alf Grant’s craftsmanship and described the piece as “most charming.” She not only wore the brooch to celebrate her milestone birthday but also continued to incorporate it into her wardrobe for various public appearances. The brooch was notably showcased during her visit to the Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training Regiment in Bicester and a Rugby League Reception at Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

Alf Grant expressed his pride and pleasure in seeing Princess Anne regularly wear the brooch he created for her. He has cherished photographs of the royal wearing the iconic piece, including official portraits from her 40th birthday celebrations that were featured in newspapers worldwide. Princess Anne’s continued appreciation for the brooch was further exemplified when she wore it during her 70th birthday tour, which was televised for audiences around the globe.

A Royal Thank You

Alf Grant received a letter from the palace on behalf of Princess Anne, thanking him for his exceptional workmanship on the brooch. This gesture not only highlighted the royal’s gratitude but also emphasized the significance of the brooch in her collection. Princess Anne’s unwavering support for Alf Grant’s creation demonstrates the lasting impact of his craftsmanship in the world of royalty.
