The Impact of Influencers: Encouraging Men’s Health through Friendship

In today’s society, influencers have become a driving force in shaping popular opinion and behavior. DeMarco Morgan, an ABC anchor and now a host on GMA3, is using his platform not only to inform and entertain but also to promote men’s health. With his recent journey towards a routine colonoscopy, DeMarco aims to influence men to be more aware and proactive in taking care of their health. Through the power of friendship, he embarked on this crucial journey with his childhood friends, creating a unique and impactful experience.

Turning 45, DeMarco reached the age recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for routine colonoscopies. Realizing the significance of this milestone, he took the initiative to schedule his screening promptly. However, DeMarco didn’t want to face this journey alone. He recognized the power of camaraderie and decided to invite his childhood friends, Alfred Cayasso and Ronnie Stewart, to join him on this important undertaking.

Destigmatizing Men’s Health

DeMarco Morgan strongly believes that conversations around men’s health should be as natural and commonplace as “locker room talk.” He emphasizes that men often engage in various social activities together, such as going to the barbershop, sports games, and bachelor parties. However, when it comes to discussing health-related issues, there is an unusual silence in the room. DeMarco aims to break this societal barrier by fostering open dialogue about men’s health, specifically focusing on colonoscopies.

Traditionally, discussions about health issues tend to be more prevalent among women. DeMarco highlights this discrepancy and proposes a different approach. He suggests that men should take inspiration from their female counterparts, who openly discuss and support each other in undergoing medical procedures like mammograms. By adopting a similar approach, DeMarco believes that men can create a positive change and encourage one another to prioritize their health.

“Think about the impact that we could have by people seeing three Black men not just going to get tested, but going to do it together,” DeMarco reflected on the significance of their collective action. Through their shared experience, DeMarco, Alfred, and Ronnie aimed to convey relatability and offer motivation to others who may be hesitant about undergoing a colonoscopy.

A Pain-Free Procedure

One common misconception about colonoscopies is the belief that they are a painful and uncomfortable procedure. DeMarco emphasizes that this misconception needs to be dispelled. He shares his personal experience, stating, “You feel nothing before, during, or after.” By showcasing the ease and painlessness of the process, DeMarco hopes to alleviate fears and encourage others to prioritize their health.

Empowering Black Men

DeMarco Morgan recognizes the higher rate of colorectal cancer diagnosis among Black men and the need for greater awareness in the community. He believes that when people see individuals who look like them, particularly those in influential positions, openly prioritizing their health, it can have a profound impact. By normalizing the act of seeking medical check-ups and sharing their own experiences, DeMarco and his friends aim to inspire other Black men to follow suit.

DeMarco Morgan’s journey towards a routine colonoscopy, along with his childhood friends, serves as a testament to the power of friendship and influence. Through their shared experience, they hope to normalize discussions about men’s health and destigmatize medical procedures like colonoscopies. By embracing the camaraderie and support that friendships provide, DeMarco and his friends have taken a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of men everywhere. It is through these influential efforts that we can create a society that prioritizes health and encourages everyone to take preventive measures for a better future.
